Rugs have the ability to add some texture, pattern, warmth, and just really SPICE up a space! Finding a pattern you love is the easy part. The more challenging part is actually finding the perfect size for your space! You know what you think will look best with the colors, but what will function best in the room? That is why we are writing this easy “how-to guide” on choosing the perfect size rug for your needs!

Rug Sizes

First, let’s talk about the most common size of area rugs that are sold. The key word here is COMMON because we are all about customization here! If you are looking for a specific look, we will always try to make that happen!

  1. 3 ft by 5 ft

  2. 4 ft by 6 ft

  3. 5 ft by 8 ft

  4. 8 ft by 10 ft

  5. 9 ft by 12 ft

Rug Rule

Second, let’s talk about the “rug rules.” (A more appropriate term would be guidelines because we are a firm believer in your house, your RULES!)

  1. Rug Size DOES NOT EQUAL Room Size

In order to avoid getting the wrong size rug, do not go off the size of the space. Instead, go off of the way the room looks with the furniture in place! This will help you decide the size of the carpet, in actual use!

  1. Don’t be Scared to Size Up

If you are not 100% sure about the size, it is okay to go up a size. A lot of times, furniture will sit on top, sort of hiding some of the extra space. Just be sure the rug fits inside the room, LOL!

  1. Room Orientation DOES EQUAL Rug Orientation

If you have a very square room, a square rug will help maintain balance and shape. Same with a long room, or any other room. Matching the shape of the room with a similarly shaped rug enhances the natural features of the room.

  1. Have a Layout in Mind

Do you want all the legs of the furniture on the rug? Half on and half off? All off? Having an idea of your vision will help decide how big of a rug you need!

Tape Test

Last but not least of our tips, the tape test! Using a painter or masking tape, that won’t damage the floors, allows you to tape out the area you want the rug in, to see which size you find to be the most appealing!
